Hi! My name is Claire and I am just starting out on a wonderful adventure working for myself, building a business online.
Today, I am a 55 year-old grandmother 0f 7, living in the Midlands in the UK. I became disabled in 1999 after a stroke at quite a young age and spent many years getting stronger and learning to get around again. For 20 years, I worked in the Entertainment Industry, as a Professional Acting Tutor and Casting Director, although I also acted, directed, produced and wrote for screen.
I wasn’t able to go back to work in the traditional sense, and many of my previous activities, whilst I did try, were much to difficult for me to sustain physically, so I went back to University and earned a BA Hons (with Distinction) in Creative Writing & English Language and went on to get a Post Graduate Diploma (with Distinction).
Trouble was, I found I was now even more difficult to employ (disabled, middle-aged, female, over-qualified, etc). How to get back into the workplace? How to work with all my challenges? What could I do? How could I work around my own needs, rather than an employers? I wasn’t ready for the discard pile just yet – besides, with all the changes in the UK, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to rely on Disability Benefits or Support, not to mention would there be a pension for me at retirement? I had to do something. I decided to try working online.
However, there were some more challenges waiting for me. What could I do with little or no capital? After all, I was on both Social and Disability Benefits, and I’d been that way for a long time so I didn’t have any assets or savings either! I owned no property, had a dismal credit rating (so no bank would lend to me), no credit cards to borrow against and I didn’t know anyone with enough money to lend me capital to get started. I’d have to do it all from almost £0!
I was wary, because I had tried various online programs with ‘Get Rich Quick’ or other nebulous promises before and gotten nowhere. Most of them were either dubious Pyramid Schemes or MLM and others may have been fine, but required some knowledge or funds to even get started.
I decided to try eBay/Amazon. This also has not been without its problems or learning curve, and I have to say that, so far, it is working out fine (I started with second hand games, then when I made a few pounds bought some watches from China and sold those, and finally, moved on to buying some cosmetics wholesale). OK, so far so good!
Trouble is, whilst I do have many orders a day, I have come across two more challenges. a) as the business grows I am finding it more and more difficult to keep up physically (lots of heavy deliveries; several trips to the post office; etc); but, with such a competitive market as eBay and even Amazon, by the time you have covered your cost per item, postage, and eBay fees, there’s almost nothing left for any gross profit – and Net Profit? Well, I’m wondering if I’ll ever make any. So the key here is volume, volume, volume. That’s fine, but when you have physical and mobility challenges, like myself, it’s a little too labour-intensive.
I wasn’t ready to give up yet though (and I still run my cosmetics company – which deals in genuine Cruelty-Free Cosmetics, by the way), but I needed to get my self-employed income up more quickly with less physical effort in order to either afford staffing to help with the ‘heavy stuff’, and b) to raise my profits to the point where I could actually afford to pay myself a wage before my benefits dried up (I was given 12 months support to get my business going and give up the support or fail and return to a life on benefits).
That’s when I stumbled across an amazing opportunity! With scepticism at first, I read about Wealthy Affiliates. I had tried affiliates before, and even believed it could work if you knew enough, but had never managed to either afford it or get to grips with it. But this seemed different.
I didn’t need to spend a single penny, and they were willing to provide FREE websites, FREE step-by-step training that held my hand every single step of the way. And, even better, I found a network of very nice people, all willing to share their knowledge, experience and support in a variety of ways and from a variety of backgrounds. I decided to try it out, it would cost me nothing. WOW, I wish I had found this years ago!
Now, I know I will never look back – and just in case you’re wondering, this works regardless of the kind of business you would like to do online. It doesn’t matter if you want to work retail, services, a blog, whatever you want.
Wealthy Affiliates teaches you how to set up and how to organise your website, it gives you all the tools you will need (blog, eCommerce, traditional website, etc) and all for FREE. There are thousands of hours of training and regular classrooms and step-by-step tutorials that even the biggest novices can follow – again, FOR FREE.
You have access to a massive network of people who have experience in a huge range of industries (from tech, internet, teaching, sales, you name it) who are all willing to take the time to help answer your questions and guide you along your journey.
And, (for me the BIGGEST appeal) was that I was never once given the hard-sell to upgrade to PRO or do anything, invest anything, or commit to anything that I didn’t want to or wasn’t ready for. Wow.
So, it wasn’t long before I was so blown-away that I decided to share it with you. I want you make sure that as many people, especially people like myself with little or no way to get started in anything worthwhile, were given the chance to earn their own freedom to work from home, online, and to generate financial freedom and security for themselves. So here we are.
